While most villas have water purification systems including UV filters, we recommend bottled water as it's safer and most people say it tastes much better.
Drinking water out in the town should be restricted only to bottled water and glasses of water poured at reputable hotels, resorts, and restaurants where your server has reassured you that what they're serving is "agua purificada"-purified water.
No special permits are needed. However, you will need a valid driver's license issued by your state of residence. The roads are generally safe, but narrow by U.S. standards; be extra careful.
Distracted driving penalties are taken seriously and can cost upwards of $400 USD.
The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18 years of age. Drinking Alcohol in Public - while this is tolerated to an extent, it is illegal to drink alcoholic beverages on the street, in vehicles, at the beach, and in other public places. It is an offense to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol so taking an uber or taxi is highly recommended and a lot safer!
The currency used in Los Cabos, Mexico is the Mexican Peso. Exchange rates at booths and hotels are slightly lower than at banks, but you may have to wait in line a lot longer. Most shops and restaurants accept dollars and credit cards. Restaurants have been known to offer very poor exchange rates when using USD. Having pesos on hand is highly recommended.
By law, merchants are required to give change in Pesos only, no matter what currency you pay with.
Merchants may request "pesos only" as there are restrictions from the Government limiting the amount of USD a business can accept monthly.
Cabo has great weather and great activities all year round, but there are two times of the year you may want to avoid is the hot, rainy season during August and September.
You will need a passport that's valid for at least six months after your entry to Mexico. You'll also need a Mexican Tourist Permit that is usually given on the plane prior to arrival. Be sure to hold on to that card throughout your stay, as you'll need to present it upon departure. Should you lose your tourist card, you will need to pay a fine and obtain a replacement visa at the immigration booth located at the departure level in the San Jose Airport.
Residents of countries other than Canada and the US may require a visa to enter. However, if you have a US Visa that is generally accepted. Please inquire for further details on your country of residence.
The summer months (June - November) are the best times to catch waves. The waves are always great and the beaches are always welcoming. To drive from San Diego/Tijuana border to Cabo San Lucas is approximately 1,640km and takes about 19 hours.
The main airport (SJD) is located approximately 20 minutes by car from the Hotel and Condo zone in San Jose if you take the new toll highway which costs 27 pesos (about USD $2.70) each way. If you decide to save the toll count on a longer trip through the heavily congested town of San Jose. This route is especially slow during afternoon rush hour.
