Cabo Photography

Sun Cabo has always felt it important to photograph our homes as well as possible. We choose not to cheapen the house with bikini glad women as they are not fixtures and are unlikely to be at the house when our guests arrive for their vacation. No we spend our time ensuring the light depicts the homes as they are. We want the houses to look great but not mislead anyone.

While we have never charged our villa owners for the photo shoots used to promote their homes our attention to detail has been recognized and developers are now asking us to provide photographic service for new projects as well as existing villas. Congratulations to John Baer and Dave Girard for their skill experience and willingness to rough it under the most basic of conditions.

This week Dave is camping out in a house on the beach missing the temperate climate of Vancouver, BC. Included is a photo of the shack he will be photographing. Dave we salute you for your dedication to your art!

Charter Yachts New Home

Monday night, April 12th, saw the official opening of the new boat storage and maintenance facility at the Puerto Los Cabos small craft harbour. The 20,000 sq ft dry-stack facility with a 150 ton Travelift crane can handle vessels up to 125 feet in length and got a good test by hauling up the 110 ft Panache. This is the first dry storage facility in Baja and should be of interest to many boat owners in the area who are absent for long periods of time. The dry stack storage facility is for boats and tenders up to 33 feet.

The Travelift is the most modern lifting device available and is designed to displace the points of pressure on lifts to reduce stress on the hull. The company operating the facility have brought in experienced staff from their operation in San Diego.

The end of April will mark the end of what I believe has been one of the best offers we have ever been able to offer in Cabo. Since Casa Esperanza was available to rent the owner has allowed us to offer this 4 bedroom luxury villa at just $950.00 per night. To put that into perspective a 4 bedroom unit in the residences next door at the Esperanza resort is $3500.00 but then you need to add another 29% for service fees and taxes.

What Price for Expertise?

In any recession Travel suffers but in the economic collapse that we hope we are now climbing out of it could be that the travel industry will never recover to where it was before. As in many other markets clients seem to be splitting into 2 definable categories: price-sensitive and value added.

The price sensitive is far beyond the client who is looking for a deal, this is the shopper who simply looks at the cost and is inevitably at risk of buying the nightmare holiday rather than the dream one. How cheap does it have to be to be good value if the trip is a disaster?

Value added clients are those who are willing to pay more to get advice on purchases. They might not always approach a purchase that way but if they contact either a travel agent or travel consultant that is in effect their position. 97% of travelers believe they will pay more if they book travel through a travel agent even though this is not the case. Indeed the travel agent can often find better options and deals than are easily found by the client themselves.

Travel agents have a wealth of knowledge about travel but often it is more general, many specialize in certain areas or seek experts for help with specific destinations. Those that specialize are consultants and as consultants they seek to match the best travel experience to the clients requirements by asking the right questions, doing research, and making recommendations based upon their knowledge.

The travel consultant minimizes the risk in purchasing a vacation, business trip, or other travel experience. In many cases the difference in price from other sources is nil, but where there are fees they are clearly value added and worthwhile. You do get what you pay for afterall.

New Hope for Tourism?

The travel and tourism industry is more reliant upon economic health of nations and consumer confidence than most other industries, which is why talk within the industry is no about recessionary counter measures, financial institution bonuses, and economic action plans than it is about the introduction of a new 5 star resort in Los Cabos. In years gone by Groundhog Day was a big deal as tour operators hoped for a few more weeks of winter to coax more vacationers to the sun in Mexico and the Caribbean.

So in the last few weeks some long awaited optimism has started to return, not because bookings are increasing, occupancy in hotels is up, or travel companies are hiring but because key economic indicators in the US are showing that the world's largest economy is growing. What was more of a surprise was how quickly:

It was reported today that the US economy grew at an annualised rate of 5.9% in the last 3 months of 2009. These were revised figures showing a higher rate of growth on the original figures. What this shows is that the US is coming out of the recession rapidly and what is healthy is that this increase was due to an increase in manufacturing output and not consumer spending, in fact consumer spending shrank in terms of the numbers but still show an increase overall.

Manufacturing has increased to meet demand as retailers and businesses replenished stock levels. Business spending on equipment and software saw a jump by over 18% and exports of US goods at 22.4% which is the fastest pace in 13 years.

While all this is very good news it is evident that the experience of this recession has effected people significantly and it could take many months even years before consumer confidence and spending return to the levels they were at during the late 1990s and early years of this century. That might be a good thing but overall everyone in the travel industry is praying that the good economic news is sustained and breathes new life into our flagging industry.

True Luxury for Less Money

Los Cabos has 3 world class and renowned resorts that provide unsurpassed luxury accommodations and services: Las Ventanas, Esperanza and the One & Only Palmilla. The last two have residential communities close to them that provide similar levels of accommodations to visitors wanting the privacy and intimacy of a villa rather than a hotel.

In Palmilla case the name actually includes not only the hotel but also several residential communities. San Jose del Cabo

Living in the shadow of her sister town, Cabo San Lucas, as a destination for tourism San Jose del Cabo is slowing evolving into a destination in its own right. Always popular with frequent travelers to Los Cabos the town offers a different feel to the energetic Cabo San Lucas.

San Jose del Cabo has more personality in part due to it being the older of the two towns and a more concentrated downtown area. If San Lucas is frenetic San Jose is laid back and this tends to be attractive to gringos making Los Cabos their permanent home. The ambiance of the town lends itself to the art community which has grown steadily and is now an established attraction. Within the space of 4 small city blocks there are now 14 galleries.

Hurricane Rick bears down on Cabo!

Hurricane Rick which was recently a full fledged category 5 hurricane, has now been downgraded to a category 2 storm with maximum sustained wind speeds of 105mph down from it's peak of 180mph. It's still a very dangerous storm and has already claimed one victim who strayed to close to the dangerous surf and was pulled out to sea.

Hurricane Rick is expected to continue to weaken and is expected to strike Cabo at around 5am on Wednesday, October 21.

Watch all the action from our Live Cabo Webcam! The waves are getting pretty big now and it's only going to get worse.

Surf and Dining

Many visitors to Los Cabos in search of surf to ride will know of the Cabo Surf Hotel and the Costa Azul, the beach's real name is Acapulquito. What is becoming wider known is that the restaruant that overlooks the surf break, Old Man's, is worth a visit for the food. A few years ago the hotel held a competition for a new name and Seven Seas was chosen (I still like my idea or The Board Room).

For those who frequent the Seven Seas there was good news this month with the return of Chef Alex Roriguez. Alex had been away training other chefs also working for the Balderrama Chain of hotels.

The menu at Seven Seas is changing and Alex's return has been celebrated with some new dishes. If you have not eaten at this restaurant then I would certainly recommend you try it. While the atmosphere is very casual the quality and attention to small details make the experience one to savour, from the freshly baked bread roles to the sorbet served between courses.

As one would expect in Los Cabos the menu focusses on seafood and the popular 'Surprise Me Chef' plate allows Chef Alex to prepare the pieces of seafood you select using the freshest ingrediaents he has that day, never the same and always delicious. Prices are mid-range with this dish costing $25.00.

The restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner with and dinner reservations recommended.

It’s new in Cabo but the celebrities have been doing it for quite a while now as an effective power workout. SUP .......... STAND UP PADDLE. Just like surfing you stand on a surfboard and use a long paddle to push yourself forward through the water. This new variation of surfing originated in Hawaii for practical reasons to reach the far off reefs. The Hawaiian surfers also used this method as an alternative way to train and also to take photos of the tourists. One main difference between the modern idea of surfing and SUP is that you don’t need a wave, and because of the height above the water, you can enjoy the visibility and scenery! SUP Surfing has become very popular in the warm waters of Medano Beach. The “A listers” have been honing their skills in California and are ready to stand up with the best of them in Los Cabos. This is the ultimate in balance and core workout combined with a fun day in the sun. SUP boards are generally slightly longer and thicker than the average surfboard but it is surely just a matter of time before the beaches are lined with boards and paddles in every size and shape to suit the beach goers.

Many people are surprised to learn that the Christmas holidays are some of the busiest weeks in Cabo San Lucas, right up there with Spring Break and Memorial Day weekend! Many families choose to head down and spend December 25th in Cabo, celebrating a traditional Christmas holiday in the sun as opposed to the snow and cold that most of us experience this time of the year! Wonderful memories are made and new traditions are formed, with many clients returning year after year and often to the same villa as the previous vacation. Others opt to wait it out and head down just before the exciting New Years celebrations. Not likely but give the man a chance - just because they are not official dates do not rule out an appearance of Sammy or any of his friends who are in town to have a great time and rock the town!!

Surf's Up in Los Cabos!

Cabo San Lucas is popular for many things, the beautiful sandy beaches, luxurious 5 Star resorts, exciting nightlife, high end shopping and of course the fine dining! While surfing takes place year round in Cabo, the best waves are found during the summer months between July and August. The popular and easily accessible breaks are located in San Jose del Cabo and along the corridor. Beer Shortage - Crisis in Cabo

If you are heading into San Lucas today be prepared. An unusual scheduling of Cruise Ships has resulted in 5 large vessels all sitting in the Bay of Cabo San Lucas today. If everyone on board decides to take a tender into town the downtown area will be swarming with tourists - bar and restaurant owners will be stocking up frantically to ensure they can accommodate the needs of the thousands of visitors today.

Do not panic though San Jose del Cabo has sufficient supplies of Corona, Pacifico, Dos Equis, Modelo, and other brands to keep everyone happy.

Where can you watch new release movies in Full sized recliners with a cold beer or cocktail for a price less than a bucket of popcorn in most multiplexes? The answer my friends is at Cinema Paraiso in the heart of Cabo San Lucas. If you are okay with a regular seat then prices start at just $28 pesos but those in search of something a little more spacious will revel in the VIP lounge for a price as low as $60 pesos.

Happy Mexican Independence Day! 199 Years and Counting.

Today Mexicans all over the world celebrate the anniversary of the beginning of Mexico's War of Independence.

In the early morning hours of March 16, 1810, in the town of Dolores, Guanajuato, Miguel Hidalgo rang the church bell to gather the townspeople. He called for them to rise up against the Spaniards - the hated Gachupines - who had exploited and oppressed Mexicans for generations.

Although Mexico did not acheive independance until 1821, it is this event, known as "Grito de Dolores" which is commemorated every year in town squares across Mexico.

The largest celebration is in Mexico City's Zocalo which is decorated in the national colors of red, white and green from the begining of September. In the late evening of September 15th, the President of the Republic goes out onto the balcony of the National Palace and rings the very same bell Miguel Hidalgo rang in 1810. (The bell was brought to Mexico City in 1886) The President yells to the people below who respond with an uproarious "VIVA!" Basically this is a tribute to all of the Mexican heroes of independence.

Club Campestre San Jose GC

One of the newest golf courses to open in Los Cabos is located at the roundabout as you enter San José from the west. Measuring 7,055 yards from the championship tees, this Nicklaus-designed course is the first one to use Paspalum grass, a grass resistant to salt water.

The club includes a top-of-the-line 40,000-square-foot clubhouse. This par-71 championship course features a plethora of sand traps and a host of picturesque views of the Sea of Cortés from almost every hole.
