CELEBRATE PITAHAYAS
Pitahayas – known as dragon fruit – are the bright red or green semi sweet fruit that grows on the Baja California cacti plants in the summer months. The Mexicans hold a traditional festival in the town of Miraflores which is half hour drive north of the airport. The town was established in the 1700s by the French who were in awe of the beauty of the flowers and the women (of course!), and thus gave it the name of “Miraflores – Look at the Flowers”.
The festival is a celebration of fruit, flowers and mostly everything that is local from the food to the entertainment. They also hold a Live Painting contest where local artists from La Paz, Todas Santos and Los Cabos have four hours to complete a painting that is then judged by a panel of local art experts.
You’ve missed it this year, but mark your calendars for 2010!
